Research Themes
Members of the CVRI have diverse interests and expertise encompassing:
- basic science (including computational biology and x-ray crystallography)
- molecular and cellular biology(regulation of gene expression, mitochondrial bioenergetics and regulation of mitochondrial function, SR protein structure, intracellular stress signaling including structure/function of bioactive lipids, vascular function, inflammation, etc)
- classic cardiovascular pathophysiology
- clinical research
- patient care
- community health
By capitalizing on this breadth of knowledge, the member-faculty of the CVRI seek to work together to conduct state-of-the-art translational research that is at the forefront of cardiovascular science. Current overarching research themes include:
- myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury and cardioprotection
- cerebral ischemia and stroke
- heart failure
- hypertension
- thrombosis, platelet aggregation and coagulation
-
relationships and interactions between cardiovascular diseases and
- occupational stress
- diabetes
- systemic lupus erythematosus
- sleep apnea
- cardiovascular health education
Our goal is to obtain novel ‘bench to bedside’ and ‘clinical trial to clinical practice’ insight into each of these important topics by:
- fostering interaction and collaboration among investigators within each area of strength; and
- promoting ‘cross-talk’ and interaction among research themes.
